This video demonstrates the procedure on a young teenage female who had a curve in the lumbar spine which measured 51-degrees. In this example, four disc spaces in between the spine bones are removed. After removal of the discs, small metal cages are placed in the site of the disc removal. Metal screws are then placed through the vertebrae in the portion of the spine, which is curved. A metal rod can then be placed in between the screws and secured with a locking cap.

VEPTR™ is used to treat TIS, a condition caused by congenital or early onset scoliosis or by hypoplastic thorax syndromes. Deformities of the chest wall, rib cage and spine developing in young children can restrict lung growth or complicate breathing, resulting in TIS. The VEPTR™ procedure addresses both chest wall and spine deformity directly.
